Saozinha BIOGRAPHY:
Sãozinha Fonseca grew in Brava, the island of a prominent cultural figure, Eugénio Tavares. While she was growing up, two major influences forged what she has become as a singer and interpreter.
One influence was religious. Sister Luisa Vasconcelos and Father Paulino were her mentors. They laid the foundation that allowed Sãozinha to become an accomplished choir leader and a sublime psalm singer. Moreover, the wonderful compositions of an Italian Franciscan priest and extraordinary composer, Father Máximo, made such a lasting impression on her that it actually shaped her style of singing.
Another influence was the close contact that she had with morna from Djabraba, that is, morna played and sung in accordance to the distinctive rhythm from that island. At home, her proud father, a talented composer himself, was an inspiration. Moreover, she spent countless hours with Tibia Barbosa and other interpreters learning the extensive and unique collection of songs from the gifted composers that the little island of Brava produced.
She has published three CDs, and is presently working with Tuquinha Productions for the release of a fourth. Presently, Sãozinha sings in special occasions such as weddings, “Noite Caboverdeanas,” and special events produced by Tuquinha Productions.
